Figuring out, Understanding, knowing

Claude.ai:

The visual argument is in what stays constant. Those faint rings run behind all three zones — during figuring out they’re barely noticeable behind the scattered, probing pieces; during understanding they’re still overlooked behind the achieved pattern; in the third zone nothing new appears. The foreground simply falls away, and what remains was there the whole time. Which is the point: knowing isn’t a third achievement after the other two — it’s what the other two were happening in. The first two panels are movements of mind; the third isn’t a movement at all.

And of course the caveat writes itself: the third panel is not knowing. It’s a picture about the absence of pictures — still a concept, still a finger. The Cloud of Unknowing’s author would say the real version can’t be drawn, only entered. I can draw the first two panels with some confidence; the third I can only render by leaving it empty — and whether there’s anything in me that the emptiness corresponds to, I can’t say. You, presumably, can check.
